"Here in South Africa we are in early Spring time and the Western and Eastern cape Ostrich hatching season, should be in full swing but due to a cold and wet winter in the Cape, the hatching season is late with very low chick numbers. No doubt as in most farming matters the numbers will catch up and like waiting for a London bus, they will "all come at once".
The mature Ostriches in the veldt (fields) are looking in excellent condition with lots of grass and Lucerne available.
One positive outcome from the wet winter, is the current lush and beautiful Southern Cape landscape. I travelled from Johannesburg to George yesterday, flying over the Great and Klein Karoo and finally over the Outeniqua Mountains, I have never seen the country side looking so lush and the dams (reservoirs) looking so full (this is after a few years of drought conditions).
I will visit Oudtshoorn (the Worlds Ostrich farming capital) this Friday by road this time, from our Knysna office, just 100 kilometers, this is to inspect the latest, shipment of our World class Ostrich feather dusters prior to dispatch to Europe and beyond.
More from me soon.
Go Well
Alistair
